The transgenic Enterobacter cloacae with the insecticidal tcdA1B1 from symbiotic bacteria of entomopathogenic nematodes was constructed and showed high toxic potential against Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki in the laboratory. In this study, the efficacy of this transgenic E. cloacae against C. formosanus colonies in the field was evaluated. Colonies of C. formosanus were detected in soil in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Baits containing the transgenic E. cloacae were applied using underground and aboveground bait stations to monitor the colonies. The colonies of the termites were eliminated by the baits containing the transgenic E. cloacae in 3-5 months. The total weight consumption of the baits of the three colonies was 18.93 g, 30.78 g and 37.22 g, respectively. The results indicated that the toxic baits containing E. cloacae/tcdA1B1 showed insecticidal activity against the termites. This was the first record of C. formosanus control with the transgenic bacteria in the field.
